WACHTELL, Marsha Banen 70, passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2010, in Encino, California, surrounded by her family and friends, and following her courageous battle with ALS. She is survived by her husband of over 42 years, Michael; her daughters, Lisa and Karyn; her sons-in-law, Michael and David; her precious grandchildren, Benjamin, Tobey, Gabriel and Jessica; and numerous loving family members. Marsha was born and raised in Hibbing, Minnesota. She attended the University of Wisconsin for two years where she majored in dance, and then transferred to the University of Minnesota where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation and dance. After college, Marsha worked as a physical educational instructor and teacher where she utilized her extensive college training. Marsha married Michael, whom she met in Washington D.C., in 1968, and they moved to Los Angeles in 1969. Aside from her most treasured role as mother to her children, Marsha was a successful entrepreneur, establishing her own business in the field of advertising and promotional specialties. She was an active and passionate community volunteer and leader. While her children were in high school, Marsha served on and ultimately was the President of the Westlake School for Girls Parents Association in Los Angeles. For over four decades, Marsha also devoted herself to numerous agencies within the Jewish community. She was a life member of Hadassah, and one of the Charter members of the South Valley Group. She held many leadership roles in Hadassah, including serving as President of South Valley Group for two years (1992-1994), long-standing Vice President of Membership for South Valley Group, and long-time advisor to the Doria Group. She also was the long-time Membership Chair for the Northern Areas Resource Center in the San Fernando Valley. Marsha held a variety of leadership positions for the Jewish Federation's Valley Alliance. She became a Lion of Judah and served on the Board until her untimely death. Marsha was also a member of the El Caballero Country Club Women's Auxiliary. Marsha has been recognized by many charitable organizations, and has received several awards, including the Jewish Federation Valley Alliance's Women's Campaign Award and Hadassah's National Leadership Award. In 2005, she was the Jewish Federation Valley Alliance's sole honoree at the Organizations Assembly. With Marsha's passing, we remind ourselves and others that life is to be celebrated and lived to the fullest.
